Traveling as a family changes everything.
The way you plan, the way you pack, and definitely the way you think about “what ifs.” When it’s not just you anymore, those little travel hiccups can turn into big, expensive problems real fast.
After years of traveling solo and now traveling with a kiddo, one thing has become very clear to me: family travel insurance is a non-negotiable. It’s about protecting the time, money, and energy you’ve already invested into a trip that probably took months to plan.
This guide breaks down what family travel insurance is, what it actually covers, why it matters, and how to choose a plan that makes the most sense for your fam.

Family trips come with higher stakes. More people, more moving parts, and usually a much bigger upfront investment.
Here’s why I’ll never skimp on protecting my family:
One of the most common points of confusion is the difference between trip protection and travel medical insurance. They’re related, but they’re NOT the same thing.
Many family plans bundle both, but coverage amounts and limits vary. And while some domestic health plans offer limited international coverage, relying on that alone can leave major gaps.
Being able to cover multiple travelers under one policy keeps paperwork and claims simpler, which is a lifesaver when you’re already juggling kids, schedules, and travel plans.
I also like that you’re not forced into a one-size-fits-all option. You can choose your deductible, coverage length, and overall coverage limits based on how your family actually travels.
For me, that flexibility makes it easier to balance protection and cost without paying for coverage that doesn’t make sense for our trip (no skydiving for us!).
For U.S. residents, Atlas Journey is WorldTrips’ primary trip protection plan, and it’s designed to work well for family travel.

Some trips call for extra flexibility.
Cancel For Any Reason (CFAR) is an optional upgrade available on select plans. Your standard trip cancellation benefit already reimburses you for covered reasons listed in the policy. CFAR on the other hand allows partial reimbursement (often 50% or 75%) if you cancel for reasons not covered, such as a change of plans or concerns about traveling.
There’s an important timing detail here. CFAR usually must be added within a set window after making your first trip payment, often within two to three weeks.
For families traveling with furry friends or arranging care at home, there’s also a Pet Care upgrade, which can provide cancellation coverage due to the illness or death of your pet, or vet coverage if your pet is hitting the road with you.
No one likes dealing with insurance claims, but knowing what to expect helps a ton.
Here are a few of my top tips to ensure everything goes smoothly should you need to file a claim.
Family travel insurance isn’t about finding the cheapest option. It’s about finding the right fit.
Just like you wouldn’t book a flight with three layovers when a direct option makes more sense, or choose a questionable motel when a comfortable hotel is within reach, insurance works the same way.

Africa offers some of the most stunning safari destinations and wildlife experiences that are second to none. If you are planning a safari or wildlife holiday, you will probably want to look for safari and wildlife destinations that can offer you the most surreal experiences. While South Africa, Botswana and Tanzania are among the most well known countries that offer such memorable holidays, Kenya tops the list for those looking for unforgettable wildlife experiences.
For many decades now, Kenya has remained a mecca for safari enthusiasts and wildlife lovers. The country has an abundance of various animals such as lions, leopards, cheetahs, giraffes, African buffaloes, elephants and rhinos. If you love wildlife and nature, planning a Kenya family holiday allows you to take full advantage.
Known as the Greatest Spectacle on Earth, the Great Migration of the Masai Mara is arguably the most rewarding wildlife experience in Kenya. During this period, a massive population of wildebeests, zebras and other animals undertakes a long trek from Tanzania’s Serengeti into Kenya’s Masai Mara. However, they must cross the crocodile-infested Mara River, which adds an element of danger to their journey. The Masai Mara migration is one of Kenya’s biggest attractions and draws many visitors from around the world. The peak season for sightings is from June to October, during which you are more likely to see dramatic river crossings and intense wildlife encounters.
If you have been browsing the internet about Kenya, you might have seen images of people feeding giraffes from a window. Located a short distance outside of Nairobi, the Giraffe Centre is a must-visit when you are exploring Kenya. This can be one of your first wildlife encounters upon arrival given its convenient location to the capital city. It’s a great way to meet the tallest mammal in Africa and hand-feed them. The Giraffe Centre is also an educational experience, teaching visitors how these giraffes were brought back from the brink of extinction. You can spend a couple of hours walking around the park or you can even book a room at Giraffe Manor, a luxurious boutique hotel where you can meet the giraffes up close.
One of the most memorable interactions you can possibly have with baby elephants in Kenya is at the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust Nairobi Nursery. Located in Nairobi National Park, this sanctuary rescues and rehabilitates orphaned elephants. Visitors can learn about the nursery’s conservation efforts and even participate in feeding the baby elephants during their midday mud bath. However, in order to access this special interaction, you do need to book your spot in advance, ensuring a unique and intimate experience with these gentle giants.
If you love walking, try a bushwalk at Hell’s Gate National Park, the only national park in Kenya where walking and biking is allowed. This park is ideal for those who want to try walking and cycling safaris, allowing you to get closer to the animals while soaking up the stunning natural landscape. This wildlife experience is unlike any other in Kenya because you explore the park at your own pace. You can walk or cycle and hear zebras munching grass or see giraffes in their natural habitat. It’s not uncommon for warthogs to suddenly dart across the dirt road in from you. With no major predators such aslions, you are safe to explore this national park on foot or bicycle.
While game drives offer an excellent way to see wildlife, exploring the landscape from above provides another spectacular experience. Hot air balloon rides in the Masai Mara offer unforgettable views as you scan the landscape from the sky. These one-hour rides typically take place early in the morning, allowing you to enjoy the spectacular Kenyan sunrise. As you hover over the plains, you can observe animals and birds going about their routines. Similar hot air balloon ride experiences are available at Amboseli National Park, offering breathtaking views of Mount Kilimanjaro.
Lake Naivasha is one of the most beautiful lakes in Kenya. While staying around the lake, you can opt for a boat safari, adding another element to your safari experiences. A boat safari on Lake Naivasha allows you to explore various bird species and to observe hippos that dominate this freshwater lake. Other mammals, such as giraffes, zebras, waterbucks and wildebeests, can also be spotted along the shores. A boat safari offers a relaxed way to get close to the animals and birds while enjoying the stunning views of the lake and its surroundings. If you are into birdwatching, this is one area you won’t want to miss.
One of the unique wildlife experiences you can enjoy in Kenya is a night game drive. Most predators are active during the night, and these drives allow you to peek into the world of nocturnal animals. You can book night game drives at the Ol Pejeta Conservancy, one of the few private conservancies where night game drives are permitted. Being out in the wilderness at night offers a completely different experience than daytime game drives. You are likely to see more wildlife activity after sunset, adding an exciting dimension to your safari.
When it comes to wildlife experiences, Kenya certainly has no shortage of activities. This is a land where you can see Africa’s Big Five along with numerous other mammals and birds, and you can do so in a variety of settings.
